Brandt found the birds while working to capture the grandeur of Africa’s disappearing wildlife, which has been a major part of his life’s work. The process by which these unlucky birds have died is unclear, but the author says that a factor in it is the lake’s extreme reflectivity, which may cause birds to crash into the water, die, and become calcified husks. Interestingly enough, the salt-loving algae that the flamingoes eat at lakes like these are part of the reason that they become pink, alongside the shrimp that they also dine on.

The lake’s unique chemical makeup coats the carcasses in layers of salt, sodium carbonates, and sodium bicarbonates, causing the animals to become petrified sculptures over time, a remarkable. The statues appear to be very lifelike and wonderful. The lake is completely uninhabitable to all but a few organisms – salt-loving bacteria, alkali-loving fish that live near the hot springs that feed the lake, and flamingoes, which can nest safe from predators on small islands of salt. Lake Natron, lake in northern Tanzania on the border with Kenya, lying in the East African Rift System, 70 miles (113 km) northwest of Arusha. The calcified statues of numerous birds and other creatures are abundant in Lake Natron. This is the world’s fourth-largest structure. The Empire State Building has a height of 443 metres. So, just to give you an idea, here’s a contrast. It it an extraordinarily harsh environment, where the extremely salty water may reach temperatures of 60 C (140 F) and an alkalinity almost as high as that of ammonia. Approaching the shoreline of Lake Natron in Tanzania, photographer Nick Brandt faced an eerie sight: There, lying on the earth as still and stiff as statues. It contains magmatic limestone that has been created deep inside the Earth, poured out in runny lava flows, and blasted into the air to form ash clouds 10 miles high. Bright-red Lake Natron in Tanzania may not look inviting enough to take a dip and thats a good thing: its water is extremely alkaline.

Photographer Nick Brandt, however, has captured a mesmerizing series of images at Lake Natron in Africa showing us what the grim reaper‘s animal equivalents might look like. The grim reaper is a humanoid representation of death that is familiar to almost everyone.
